Remember we are talking about 1988, not 2008. Cheney was a widely respected Republican back then. Only thing that would hold him back would have been his third heart attack and bypass surgery during the summer of '88. In the end, he pulls off a narrow victory.

Cheney doesn't have the personality to succeed nationally in my opinion.  I don't think Gore, unlike Dukakis, would have blown a 17-point lead.  A Dem could have won in 1988.  I think Gore could have.  Also, remember Cheney's health would be a factor in 1988, by that time he had already had 3 or 4 heart attacks.  I'd say Gore would win this election.

Richard B. Cheney/Robert J. Dole (R): 320 EV, 51% of the PV
Albert A. Gore Jnr/Charles S. Robb(D): 218 EV, 49% of the PV

I believe that Congressman Dick Cheney of Wyoming would have been able to defeat the then Southern Centrist Senator Al Gore of Tennessee. Although I believe if this scenario was to have taken place in 1988 that Senator Gore would have performed well in the upper South, I believe that the key state in this Cheney/Gore scenario is California.

Whilst I do believe that California would be close in this scenario, I believe that Cheney would be able to win it by 1-2 points over Senator Gore. Although California was beginning to trend toward the Democratic Party in 1988, I cannot see California voting for a Southern Centrist Gore in 1988. Though saying this, it could have been possible, but I doubt it.
