Wow, the best of the elections revisited matchups we've yet had. However, Ronald Reagan is the conservative, so I vote for him.

Eugene by far but I respect Jackson when it comes to non-segregation and military issues.

What the hell happened to Mo Udall's "Mo" in the 1976 Revisited Democratic Primaries? Congressman Udall had to crash and burn like he did in the RL 1976 Democratic Primaries didn't he Sad With no sane Democrat, or moderate Republican, either Ford or Richardson being nominated I'm voting for Gene McCarthy. Even though he fell off the wagon in 1972.....eh.

If I had to pick based off of what was going on in 1976 then my votes for Jackson. If it was off of what we know now then it's Reagan.

Pick off 1976 voting, not 2008.

If Reagan won and the Iranian hostage situation occurred (to get to this point, the two major hurdles it seems to me are (a) you assume that the Iranian revolution still happens even though the administration may not have been pressuring the Shah in '77 to loosen up on his liberal critics, and (b) the dynamics of the revolution still happen such that the students decide to take the hostages and the Ayatollah's faction quickly rallies around this), I think Reagan would have launched airstrikes on Iran and the hostages would be dead, but his decision would still be popular based on the argument 'you cant negotiate with terrorists'. On that basis he would have been reelected by a 3-10 point margin with a Falklands-like situation.

If the Iranian hostage situation had not occurred it is hard to say whether he would have been reelected. If the Democrats nominate Mondale or Kennedy in 1980, he would have won even without a Falklands effect, and even with a weakening economy, but it would likely have been by a closer margin.

Either way he is unpopular throughout much of his term, but by 1984 can claim to have turned things around, setting things up well for his GOP successor.
