Funny this is brought up, because I actually DID just see that show again today, while at my grandmother's 80th birthday. After the pool party the few of us remaining went to her condo and my grandcousins (is that a word? Whatever.) started channel surfing, found it and had to watch it. And yes, it appears to be exactly like the description above.

Do you mean 2nd cousins?

My cousins' kids. Whatever they would be called.

No, BRTD should be required by law to watch all of them at least ten times each.

My reaction is best symbolized by that gif that got me mod-reviewed. Which also serves as a suggestion for anyone who actually goes to this.

I'm willing to bet good money that that's the best part of the movie.

Movies that parody twenty different movies, like Disaster/Epic Movie/Scary Movie/Meet the Spartans etc.: Yes.

Movies that keep a single theme, like Austin Powers, Blazing Saddles, Space Balls, and so on: no

I agree with your premise, but Spaceballs didn't just parody Star Wars/Trek.  There was a Wizard of Oz parody in there (the group approaching Yogurt), Indiana Jones (Lonestar's outfit), Transformers (Spaceball 1 into Megamaid) and a handfull of others I can't think of right now.

But that's nowhere near as broad as the modern parody movies are and I too think that that is a major reason these movies suck now but were so funny in the 70's and 80's.

The difference is that the modern ones aren't actual parodies, they're just movies that throw a bunch of scenes from other movies (actually other movies' trailers) together and then end every scene with a bad slapstick joke or stupid pop culture reference.

The fact that Meet the Spartans actually contained a reference to that "Leave Britney alone!" moron is enough proof only a complete idiot could like it. Imagine watching that in 20 years and anyone getting that "joke". It won't happen.

Hot Shots was pretty good too.

How about - people should skip poorly made, cash-in-on-the-promos, quasi-parody movies probably-written-over-a-weekend-by-someone-ingesting-illicit-substances, so that the studios will learn to stop churning out this crud.

Rotten Tomatoes is your friend.

Good call.  I intentionally did not say "single movie" but said "single theme."

Space Balls is actually one of my less favorite Mel Brooks movies, I just listed it because I was trying to come up with ideas to prove my point, haha.  Anyway, yeah, my point was that a movie that tries and parody two hundred very different pop culture references in an hour and a half is going to suck most likely.

I loved Spaceballs when I was 14.  It was one of my favorite movies into my 20's.  I still watch it from time to time.  Some great lines:

What's a matter Col. Sanders, Chicken?

Spaceball 1, they've gone to plaid.

I'm half man, half dog.  I'm my own best friend.

She's gone from suck to blow.

It looks awful.  I keep seeing that stupid Whinehouse scene, and I wouldn't come near it with a 50 foot pole.

BTW Ehead, take note of what idiots are going to see Death Race this weekend.

That movie embarrasses me as I would've loved to have seen it 10 years ago. Damn my idiotic 14-year old self.

Now is this Death Race movie a remake of the classic 70's move Death Race 2000?  A sequel?  A coincidence?  That was a totally awesome movie.  Tons of boobs.  Tons of blood.  Sly Stalone.  David Carradine.  What more could one ask for?

They make these sh**t movies for like $20 million and gross like $80 million in a domestic theatrical run. Add on to that rentals and overseas figures and these guys = reliable source of money for studios.

What I kinda want to know is what sort of demographic actually attends these films. 13 year old males?
hahah sadly enough, yes. Tongue
