Yes, I think they would be pretty damned good. I've never had either as I can remember and free food is always a plus, although I would try to offer some money.

Obama ought to make a point of going down to Arkansas and have some before the election. It's time damned well better spent than in Hawaii.

Fried okra is good if the batter is good and your dipping condiment is good.  Hell, pretty much any nasty thing can taste good if you fry it right and have something good to dip it in.  My mom used to eat picked okra.  Not horrible, but I'm not a fan of furry foods.

I wouldn't eat with someone who puts any stock in meaningless gestures like "breaking bread." Cool

Fried okra is good if it's crisp and dry like popcorn.  This is the first I've ever heard of dipping it.

I would love to try that stuff, though I probably wouldn't eat a huge quantity.

I know better vegs than Okra, know worse vegs (more of the former, though, but I certainly consider them edible). I'm perfectly ready to try another type of pulse - they're not gourmet's greatest delight, but few if any of them taste at all objectionable. Poor Man's Protein, they're called for a reason. I have no idea who Nelda Burrow is.

I prefer raw okra, though the fried stuff's good too.

The peas are fine. Fried okra is nasty- and my school had the annoying habit of making them a side to practically ever school lunch ever.

The only time I've ever had okra was in gumbo, I think... and then you couldn't even taste it.

As far as other southern specialties like boiled peanuts and mushy greens.. blech.  I like my greens fresh and peanuts roasted.

^^^^

i too went to school in the south.  we seemed to have fried okra every damn day.  ive never cared much for it.

i also remember my mom cooking up collard greens, which i ate with vinegar.  probably the nastiest crap ever, but as a young peckerwood i ate it with a smile on my face and asked for seconds.  nowadays young twerps are eating mac and cheese from the microwave, tater tots and fun nuggets.  not me.  i had collard greens and pintos.

i dont eat much greens these days.  i do sometimes put some uncooked mustard greens in my salad.

As far as weird school lunches:

In elementary school we regularly had baked duck breast.  Some area schools also served venison around deer hunting season (which many schools take off).

Minnesota...pft...

My elementary school was teh awesome.  They'd get a bunch of McDonalds hamburgers then take out the beef patty, put it on a plate, and call it "steak."  That served with some tasty expired ("IT'S STILL GOOD FOR YOU!!!" -- angry lunch lady, circa 1996) 1% milk = good eats.

Nuevo Méjico es mucho parsimonioso.

At least they weren't wasting your parents tax dollars.

Now I'm glad I never ate a school lunch.

In high school we actually had good food.  Subway, pasta, pizza, salad, feature lunch, or grill (yes... with real deep fried food).

Taco Tuesdays and Wild Rice Hotdish days were especially popular.

You could get a 6" sub, fruit, and milk for $1.60... that's a pretty good bargain.

The tax dollars were pocketed by corrupt leaders before they could be wasted.

Well, maybe not so much in the 90s.  Gary Johnson was pretty good at not being corrupt scum.

Boiled peanuts are actually better in regards to peanut allergies. Peanut allergies are much less common in the south due to the consumption of boiled peanuts and that's because the allergen isn't left in the peanut after cooking unlike roasting which increases the allergen compound. And you'd probably like purple hull peas, they're kinda like shelled green beans. They're good with apple cider vinegar and chopped onions.

Fried okra is ok. It tastes the same as anything fried.

Disagree. Frying food can bring out a lot of flavor if it's done correctly. Frying isn't greasy or watery if done right.

No, that looks disgusting. I don't like fried okra anyway ever since I had the misfortune of trying it. Also, I don't like to eat with stupid people so that would rule out this Nelda Burrow wench.
