The only time I've ever had okra was in gumbo, I think... and then you couldn't even taste it.

As far as other southern specialties like boiled peanuts and mushy greens.. blech.  I like my greens fresh and peanuts roasted.

As far as weird school lunches:

In elementary school we regularly had baked duck breast.  Some area schools also served venison around deer hunting season (which many schools take off).

In high school we actually had good food.  Subway, pasta, pizza, salad, feature lunch, or grill (yes... with real deep fried food).

Taco Tuesdays and Wild Rice Hotdish days were especially popular.

You could get a 6" sub, fruit, and milk for $1.60... that's a pretty good bargain.
