We're not making any advances in the atheist politician department. California had an atheist Democratic governor from 1939-1942 named Culbert Olson. Ironically in a 1942 election with hindsight probably most Republicans would vote for him over the Republican who defeated him, Earl Warren.

“It is certain that organized religion and prayers to their almighty deity have not been the means of saving humanity from want or from wars, a large proportion of which have been wars for power between conflicting religious dogmas. Nor have the principles of morality taught as a part of religious doctrine, become prevalent by that method. Witness the extent of selfishness, greed, opportunism, hypocrisy, and crime which now permeates our society.”

Olson's view of the power of the Catholic Church:
“What I wish to do now is to revert to [return to the topic of] the political activities and influence of the [Roman] Catholic Church under its priesthood direction in our secular government of California. Who in public life now or heretofore has not felt that pressure of that influence?"

Yeah, I think only one (Pete Stark) has the balls to admit it publicly.

Who is a massive FF and I am proud to say my HS was in his district. Sadly the rest of my town is in the 11th, which is half ok and half podunk BS.

Do you agree with Rick and Michael that an atheist is unfit to serve as the President of the United States (each for slightly different reasons you will note), or believe that it is at least  a big huge demerit on his or her resume?  Or do you swing the other way, and prefer someone freed from the "surly bonds of God," to a person of professed faith as President?
No. And I'd rather vote for one than a fundie. These two clowns and the idiots like them make me embarrassed to be American.

As long as you're not trying to force your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) on everybody else, then I don't really care what you believe or don't believe.

No, but I voted no, but it's a big negative b/c I wasn't sure if the question was asking if the "big negative" is in reference to the deciding factor in my vote (which is why I picked it), or in reference to holding the office.

I could care less what religion he/she is as long as he/she doesn't let that opinion interfere with his/her job.  As long as he doesn't bring that bias in, I have no problem.
