Well, at least this ad isn't related to national security. This ad opens a bigger debate about the economy.

Which is what we need more of in this campaign season.  I feel much safer than I do financially secure.

Not really that good.  No implication that he's gotten them illegally, unlike a shadowy connection with Rezko.

I'd really steer clear of "housing" questions in I were Obama.

Obama is a typical liberal elitist for knowing that he owns exactly one house.

Then Obama brings up McCain's deals with the mortgage company run by Charles Keating.

That's already been tried and he and John Glenn were cleared of misconduct.

Being cleared of misconduct by fellow members of the United States Senate doesn't mean that you didn't do something wrong. There's a lot more substance there than this Rezko and Wright bullsh**t.

The Keating 5 thing will go nowhere if it is brought up.  Just FYI.

The "house" thing, as I said earlier, may have some bite, but it is hard for me to tell right now.  The ad is good, not great, but good.  And I agree it is a bit choppy.  But the public reaction to this thing is the key, and it is often tough to tell.  It's less about the package, but rather the message.  My gut says little impact, but I really don't know.

Problem is that the "white powder" thing is eating up the network coverage a bit and once Obama names a VP, it may fall off the radar screen generally.

McCain's camp is REALLY pulling out all stops

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0808/The_POW_card.html#comments

The POW card

Eric Kleefeld notices that McCain aides referred back to McCain's time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam in defending him from the mockery over his houses.

This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison," says spokesman Rogers.

It does seem like they're flirting with Giuliani/9/11 territory here, in which at subject that seems utterly immune to humor, used as a first resort, suddenly becomes a running joke among your political enemies and your late night comic friends.

McCain himself, it should be noted, doesn't tend to talk about his prisoner-of-war experience in random contexts; but his staff and surrogates have been doing it a bit lately.

This POW thing is starting to become a joke definitely.

And I disagree with their last sentence, remember McCain brought up his POW experience in the context of a question about ABBA last week .

Guiliani's constant mentioning of 9/11 became a joke even though 9/11 is a very serious subject.    Late night comedians and all of us starting making fun of Rudy for that.  Kerry's purple hearts and war wounds were a serious subject as well before he overused them.  McCain obviously is nowhere near that level yet, but he runs a danger of running a similar route if he keeps bringing up his POW experience out of context (which he hasn't done significantly enough yet).

I haven't watched network news TV today, but I doubt he has gotten a negative headline from the media. The only way John McCain will ever get a negative headline is if he calls his wife a trollop and a c**t in public.

McCain's campaign says:
"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?"
"Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

Careful.  That's all I have to say.

Except Hawaii has no private beaches.

Yes, it was a public beach, McCain can't help but lie.

And, we all know that $4 million a year isn't rich by his standards.

I like this hole McCain is digging.
