Not surprising, anyone who didn't expect this to happen in a 50-50 race was delusional.

Seems about right, if the race is currently 50-50. I don't think Obama should pull out of the state or anything, but it's clearly not the state that's going to get him over 270.

This is the second poll in a row that shows this type of margin. It looks like Obama's state-specific economy ads in Indiana have not been working that well.

Indiana was always a stretch anyways, but this seems to confirm Indiana as most likely not a tipping point state.

Because race is the ONLY reason people could possibly support McCain.

What's really surprising is that Obama has managed to keep it so close in one of the most solidly Republican larger states in the country... This is despite the fact that Obama until recently was not hitting McCain hard on the economy in a state that has lost 25% of its manufacturing jobs since 2000.

Needless to say, as I have remarked on many other threads, I think the "race explanation" for Obama's polling and primary votes is WAY overstated (with the possible exception of a few states in the deep South).

I disagree.  90% of blacks wouldn't have voted for Alan Keyes if we had no Obama.  A good 80%-ish vote Democratic no matter what.

EDIT: whoops - typo!

Untrue, I heard Michael Steele got ~30% percent of blacks in the Maryland senate race.

According to the exit polls, Steele got about 25% of the black vote: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/MD/S/01/epolls.0.html

It's still more than the 11% Bush got.

On the other hand, Lynn Sweet sucked among blacks--there's a viability threshhold going on here, among other things.

First of all Steele was a much better candidate for MD than Bush was and second do you really expect a minority community to not vote for its guy? Seriously this happens all around the world not just in America. So Steele maybe got a 10% swing among the black vote just because he is black. Frankly that is lower than I would expect.

Yes. How did Steve Cohen defeat Nikki Tinker by such a large margin? Hillary should have gone to SC and explicitly said it was not about race. That way she would have done a little better, and also would have looked a lot better.

Oop, Lynn Swann, yep.

Funny how I accidentally name-dropped someone I didn't even know I knew.  Hooray subconscious.

Edit: Or was Lynn Sweet the Chicago press lady essentially assigned to Obama's career?  I guess it wasn't so subconscious Smiley

Nah people are the same wherever you go. American democracy is not exactly exceptional but it's a system of government that is much better than most of the world.
