Why did incumbent Mike Dewine (R-OH) lose in the 2006 senate race by such a huge margin?  He won most of his elections handily and lead in many polls at the time.

So what was the cause of Dewine self destructing to a George Allen type level?

He basically did everything wrong.  There was the weird 9/11 ad, and it never got a lot of press outside Ohio he voted so often with the Dems.  There was the thing with his son finishing fourth in the special election, and this was all independent of Ohio basically sticking it to Republicans every which way in 2006.  DeWine may be the nicest guy in the world, but he really did deserve to lose, not necessarily to Brown.
