Great stuff btw.

Whites are indeed Indies.  All the Shetland seats are held by Indies - only five candidates stood on a party platform (the Scottish Socialist Party stood in the two Lerwick wards, there was a Conservative candidate in Lerwick South and for some reason two Lib Dems in Shetland South).

Do you have the Orkneys or the Highlands?

BTW, do the Greenies or SSP hold any wards?

Greenies have a few councillors here and a few there, don't think they topped the poll anywhere, might be wrong. SSP don't have anything, Solidarity did have a councillor in Glasgow, but she defected to Labour.

Since you asked:

Orkney (possibly one of the most pointless maps ever drawn :-) ):

Highland:

Some of those Highland wards must be bigger than some English counties.

The Greens got eight councillors elected, all in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but didn't top the poll anywhere.  The SSP did win one seat, in Leven ward, West Dunbartonshire,

but didn't top the poll there (it split 2 SNP-1 Lab-1 SSP).

There are a couple of Communist councillors in Fife still. Can't remember what label they ran under.

Different Levens.  Leven, W Duns is named after the River Leven and includes the village of Renton.  The SSP councillor had previously represented the FPTP ward of Renton/Alexandria South since at least 2003.  Al will probably be along shortly with more info on Renton's particular brand of left-wing politics.  (Incidentally the village's Wikipedia entry is very funny!)

Leven, Fife, on the other hand, is an ex-coal-mining-town-cum-seaside-resort.

There are a couple of Communist councillors in Fife still. Can't remember what label they ran under.

There weren't any candidates in Fife who described themselves as Communist in 2007 or 2003.  Presumably they ran as Labour or Independent.

Left Alliance, Left List... something like that. Might count as Indies.

The white in The Lochs is one of them. Think there's one in Cowdenbeath as well.

Yeah - it's where the one Fife (ie ex-coalmining Fife. Worker Fife. Great Lockout of 1920Whatever Fife) morphs into the other (Fife North East. St Andrew's Fife. Ming Campbell Fife).

I'd never heard of the other Leven.

Independent.

Didn't West Fife elect a Communist MP from '35 to '50?

Yeah, Willie Gallacher (who had previously stood all over the place including, implausibly, Shipley. That sort of thing was normal for high-profile Commies though). His vote collapsed with the onset of the Cold War, though not so dramatically as Pollitt's in Rhondda East (though Pollitt didn't win in 1945. Interestingly, Rhondda East's (Labour) M.P throughout this period was a Syndicalist called William Mainwaring; one of the authors of The Miners Next Step decades earlier. He was fiercely anticommunist and was a big player in internal politics in the Fed). It's not fair to compare with Piratin as his seat was swallowed into a much larger one.

Good to see, if expected, that my ancestral land (the East Neuk) votes Liberal Democrat even locally.

Both Maxwell (for Cowdenbeath) and Clarke (for the Lochs) still serve. I've found a site that listed them as "Left Alliance" and two of the other three independents as "Independent", too. The fifth was somehow not listed there, but he a) represents Cupar b) stood for Labour a couple of years ago, so...

I've got a old French article on the CPGB. I should get to it sometime.

If you just add the votes together, Coldside is red. But, yeah.

For the record, removing Barrhead from the exisiting Holyrood seat would see a Tory majority of  2000-4000 Smiley
