Hello all,

I've been lurking here for a while but this is my first post.

I've been doing the same thing as afleitch but for each council separately.  The way I hit on is that the winning party is the one that wins the most seats in a ward.  If there is a tie for seats, then I look at the order the candidates were elected.  So for example in East Kilbride West the three seats split C-Lab-SNP, but the SNP candidate was elected first.

I like names on my maps...

Many thanks for the nice comments about the site!

Anyway, I thought I'd keep going with another Scotland 2007 map to keep on topic.  West Lothian:

Whites are indeed Indies.  All the Shetland seats are held by Indies - only five candidates stood on a party platform (the Scottish Socialist Party stood in the two Lerwick wards, there was a Conservative candidate in Lerwick South and for some reason two Lib Dems in Shetland South).

Since you asked:

Orkney (possibly one of the most pointless maps ever drawn :-) ):

Highland:

Some of those Highland wards must be bigger than some English counties.

The Greens got eight councillors elected, all in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but didn't top the poll anywhere.  The SSP did win one seat, in Leven ward, West Dunbartonshire,

but didn't top the poll there (it split 2 SNP-1 Lab-1 SSP).

Different Levens.  Leven, W Duns is named after the River Leven and includes the village of Renton.  The SSP councillor had previously represented the FPTP ward of Renton/Alexandria South since at least 2003.  Al will probably be along shortly with more info on Renton's particular brand of left-wing politics.  (Incidentally the village's Wikipedia entry is very funny!)

Leven, Fife, on the other hand, is an ex-coal-mining-town-cum-seaside-resort.

There are a couple of Communist councillors in Fife still. Can't remember what label they ran under.

There weren't any candidates in Fife who described themselves as Communist in 2007 or 2003.  Presumably they ran as Labour or Independent.

Good to see, if expected, that my ancestral land (the East Neuk) votes Liberal Democrat even locally.

Uhm, isn't yellow SNP?

I'm using orange for SNP and yellow for Lib Dem.
