It's good, I guess.

The only problem is when he said "How perfect."  I thought that came off as a bit sarcastic, but that's just me.

Is this the ad where McCain is supposed to speak 'directly to Obama'? They were shilling that all day on MSNBC and the NYT picked it up a few hours ago.

If it is I'm very, very happy for it. It means that Obama can wish McCain a happy birthday in return Smiley

Why does this need an ad? McCain could simply call Obama and say it, or he could say it in a public appearance.

Because that wouldn't have as positive an effect on McCain's favorables?

I hate to be cynical, but that almost makes it sound like a backhanded compliment.

No need for an ad but then again, it's a web ad. What the hell was with the poor lighting?

It's airing on television.

You know...I was hesitant to say that it was a web ad. Then I thought, "Why the hell would this go on TV?"

I wouldn't waste money on this but I guess it's a nice thing to do after his speech.

I agree with Phil, I don't particularly like the lighting much.

But the content of the ad itself is sheer genius.  No one's exactly figured out why yet, interestingly.

Both that and "job well done" are plausibly sarcastic and belittling. I don't begrudge McCain that in the ad, and I salute this one for its creativity in dealing with a very difficult position.

It was belittling of course, but not obviously so.  If it is widely aired and seen then it has the potential to give a tiny boost to McCain's favorables (or a tiny reduction in his loss from tonight, should there be one).

I think it's a great ad.  McCain does not want to be stuck in the rut of being the negative candidate this early on.  Obviously McCain isn't doing this to actually congratulate Obama.

Don't forget that there's a certain part of voting populace to whom tonight's speech will be the first time they've really paid attention to the campaign all year.  Most of them will be Dems, but there will some Indys, very, very few Republicans.

That, and it shows that, even with a flood of harsh ads (since this is business), he can still praise his challenger.

I said this another thread, but I'll repeat it here:

I think Obama may have intentionally removed MLK references out of his speech in order to undercut McCain's 'congratulations' ad!.  The news media hasn't really covered the fact that today is the anniversary of the MLK "I have a dream" speech THAT much, and I just saw the third 'Congrats' ad which vaguely compliments Obama for "this most historic of days."

I do not think swing voters will get that reference.

Exactly the same feeling I had.

Look, if McCain didn't say anything publicly...we, or some in the press...would be calling him callous and blind to the history of the moment.  He had to run the ad.  And frankly, I am pretty sure he is sincere.  McCain may think Obama hates America and wants the troops to fail.  But I don't believe the man has a racist bone in his body.  He gets what today means.

yeah, I thought the ad and not leaking his VP pick was a wise choice.  Gives him a minute to show that he is gracious...before he begins 2 months of attack starting tomorrow.
