The mayor of New Orleans has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the entire city, as Hurricane Gustav bears down on the US Gulf Coast.

Ray Nagin said residents of the city's West Bank should begin moving out at 0800 local time on Sunday, with the East Bank leaving at midday.

He called it "the storm of the century" and added: "You need to be scared".

Gustav, which is forecast to strengthen to a Category 5 storm over the Gulf, is currently passing over Cuba.

As well they should.  Even though it will probably weaken before landfall, the computer models show right now perhaps the worst possible situation for the city - much worse than Katrina actually on its present path getting the NE quadrant.

I hope that they have enough transportation this time. Of course it's easier now that NOLA has lost a lot of population, and in particular has been de-blacked.

In the future, the Louisiana Tourist Board will have a great ad campaign.

The track's shifted east since earlier today, so it's looking a lot less likely (it wasn't that likely to begin with).

Those who can afford to will, just as previously.

Ah, thats right, only the poors died last time.  Do ya think the school busses will be under water with the poors, just like last time?  Will the idiots in charge of NO still cause needless deaths, just like last time?

Phew, so the storm will just mess up some power lines.

Now we feel safe.

No me Gustav. Glad I got out of the city before the official evacuation started. That would have been insane.

I can't believe this is happening again, just three years after Katrina. It really hit home for me today, seeing all the Louisiana license plates around town. All the hotels are fully booked, and people who just got through rebuilding must wait to see what happens. What a tragedy!

Yep. I wonder how long it will be before people can return to New Orleans.
