You're not a Southerner.

And DWTL is?  Last time I checked, Virginia was a Southern state by most definitions.

Northern Virginia is not in the South.

Yes, it is.

No I wouldn't expect you to because it IS in the South...I can find lots of cites that back that claim up.  Unless we change the meaning of what "the South" is, Virginia, all of it...even NOVA, is in "the South".  That's the whole farking point of saying "cite"...well, most of the time.  Sometimes it's curiosity I guess.  It's like calling BS politely, but giving the person doing the BSing a chance to prove their BS.

"The South" is cultural, and as thus, cannot be cited. I emphatically believe that NoVA is not Southern.

Well sure, if you define it that way there are many places in "the South" that aren't southern culturaly.  I guess I was thinking in more of a geographical sense.

The South, to me, is everything in the Former Confederacy + Oklahoma.  I also call MO, KY, WV, MD, and DE Border States.

No, it has nothing in common culturally with the South, which is Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, northern Florida, northern Louisiana, most of Arkansas, parts of eastern Texas, parts of Tennessee, most of Kentucky, a bit of Missouri, a bit of North Carolina, and parts of southern Virginia.

If you want to justify it geographically, that's as dumb as saying New Mexico and Arizona are part of the South.  or Hawaii...

So you're saying NOVA is as distant culturally from "the South" as is Arizona or Hawaii?  Have you ever been to NOVA or Arizona?  I've been to both, NOVA has a LOT more in common with Biloxi than it does Phoenix.  Altanta and NOVA have a lot of the same kind of immigrants, is the Atlanta area destined to be excluded from this list in the future?  I'll grant that Atlanta is more "southern" than NOVA is, but it's just shades of gray(snicker) different.

..and I'm not saying you're wrong* and I'm right.  I'm saying it's in the eye of the beholder and how one wants to define "the South".  Some of us do it differently than others.

*well, you're wrong when you say NOVA has "nothing in common culturally with the South", it clearly does.  It might not be as strong as it was 100 years ago, but it's still there.

As George Bush said in 1980 "Conor's got the big Mo!". Well, not exactly but you get the main drift Wink

Ben, might I take this moment to tell you from more than a million miles away to say that northern Virginia is indeed a part of the South. And I categorize the American South as those that were considered a part of the "Original South" and those in the Deep South. Case closed Mr. Constine.
