Does anyone know why there was such a strong write-in movement in Texas that year?

The Atlas doesn't describe them as such, but then it doesn't claim any evidence of write-ins in Texas at all, so Colin's deduction that that's what ben musta been talking about seems reasonable.

Oh, I'm quite sure Ben must've been thinking of the Regulars. I was just wondering if the Regulars had a ballot line.

I'm sure it was made to happen, since the big folk in Texas supported the Regulars.

Clearly I was thinking of the Regulars, since the write-ins were listed as winning Washington County.

Where were they listed as write-ins?

On the county by county results for 1944, they're listed as write-ins.

Well, since I can't access them, I'll take your word for it. It may be worth asking Dave.

When you click on individual counties on the TX 1944 map, they are shown as "write-ins", but not on the State Results at the top of the page, where it says "No candidate---Texas Regulars". There is no seperate line below it for other write-ins.

By 1944, was he still strongly supported?  I'd have figured such a movement would arise more in 1940 than 1944, but I guess not.
