John McCain (considering that it is 2000, not 2008)

Pat Buchanan, cause he would have deported the 9/11 hijackers who had expired visas.

So you want us to still invade Iraq (and possibly Syria too)?

It was a figure of speech. Tongue What have you heard that has said that he would have invaded Iraq if elected president in 2000?

Um, his entire record has been pretty vocally pro intervention. He said that he was convinced that as long as Saddam was in power he would be a threat to our national security in February 2000. He voted for the war, the surge, against minimum periods for deployment, etc. He advocated strongly for intervention in the Balkans. He's hung around people like James Woolsey too, who you may remember was a vocal proponent of going into Syria. He would have gotten involved there, if not in 2003 then probably sometime in 2004-2005.

Of course McCain is more open about his aggressive aims now ("100 years in Iraq," League of Democracies, etc.), but if you look at his record during and after 2000 it's been pretty belligerent across the board.

I'm sure your other points make sense, but I will go ahead & say that I have absolutely no respect for anyone who uses the "100 years" strawman. If you want to see what I mean, watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFknKVjuyNk

He specifically says: "that would be fine with me as long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed." Sure sounds belligerent to me. Roll Eyes

I already know the context. It doesn't make it less idiotic or essentially imperialistic. Is McCain really so clueless that he thinks that Iraqis will approve of a permanent presence there? People whose own government have asked for a withdrawal, and who the polls have indicated have substantial numbers agreeing that it's OK to shoot our troops? And if he has any doubts, why say it in the first place? I'm sorry but I've studied McCain's record and his associates. They are not people known for their restraint. The last time McCain showed any hesitance towards war was in 1994, back when people were talking about invading Haiti (also a stupid idea).

I agree that it was a stupid comment. I just thought you were saying that he wanted a war going on there for a hundred years. I have known people who actually argued that, & I tend to go off easily whenever I think anyone is going towards there.

I know, I'm pretty blown away by the results myself. Or frankly, the people on the ballot.
