There's an open judgeship on the 4th district court in Minnesota (which is basically just Hennepin County) Runoff in November between these two:

I'm currently torn. I'm leaning Ranum because she's a former DFL State Senator, but Piper doesn't look too bad either. He also has many Democrats endorsing him, and nothing about him screams right wing.

I hate judicial elections.  I really don't see how the public is qualified to decide who should be a judge.

I always vote "no" on the judge retention questions.  Just on principle.

We don't have that. You just have to vote against the incumbent. No incumbent here though.

There are lots of things we should elect. But not judges. I am also against referenda in many cases. All the ridicuous anti-tax Propositions in California have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Not that anyone cares, but I've decided to look past partisanship and vote for Piper.

This is historic.

Now he'll ascend to the supreme court and write the majority opinion on a case deeming strip clubs and emo unconstitutional

His supporters (mostly Democrats) are the rather effective type while Ranum's are mostly party hacks. Not the type I have a problem with in the state legislature but this is different (please note that Piper is almost certainly a Democrat too though legally he can't openly say so and Ranum is only a confirmed Democrat because she was in the state legislature.
