two guys who I'm almost certain would be in different parties today, even though both wouldn't fit in perfectly. I think Cleveland would be a sort of libertarian-leaning moderate Republican, and very similar to Ron Paul. Teddy would be a Scoop Jackson/Joe Lieberman Democrat.

I'd still have to go with Teddy.

I'd have to go with TR, though at no fault to Cleveland.

Cleveland. He understood the need for a gold standard and a low tariff.

ABBR - anybody but Roosevelt: one of our worst presidents.

However Cleveland would be a great choice against even a decent opponent.

PBrunsel, Roosevelt also favored the gold standard. I don't see the differance between them on that issue.

This could have been the 1904 Race for President had Cleveland accpeted the Democratic Nomination.

Yes, but he turned down the nomination. The Gold Democrats wanted him again because they felt he could be the only man to destroy William J. Bryan's Silver Democrats and not be crushed by Teddy Roosevelt.

He decided against it in April 1904 and endorsed Alton B. Parker.

Teddy, mostly due to his 'big stick' policy and support for national parks.
