While I hope to have up the original proposals by the Commission at some point, (I have got Glasgow - tis fugly) for now here is Part I of a series of the notional 'jigsaw'

The 1983 notionals nationwide were a bit hit and miss (as theses things are) However here is the makeup. It allows you to translate the '74 results to '83 boundaries or if your maths is good, reverse the '83-'92 results on to the old constituencies (with many a remainder left over!)

Moray – 80% of Moray and Nairn, 62% of Banff
Banff and Buchan – 82% of Buchan, 38% of Banff
Gordon – 70% of Aberdeenshire West, 18% of Buchan
Kincardine and Deeside – 52% of Angus North and Mearns, 28% of Aberdeen South, 22% of Aberdeenshire West
Aberdeen North – 83% of Aberdeen North, 5% of Aberdeen South, 8% of Aberdeenshire West
Aberdeen South – 67% of Aberdeen South, 17% of Aberdeen North

Angus East – 63% of Angus South, 48% of Angus North and Mearns, 2% of Dundee East
Dundee East – 98% of Dundee East
Dundee West – 100% of Dundee West
Tayside North - 35% of Perth and East Perthshire, 34% of Angus South, 31% of West Perthshire and Kinross
Perth – 65% of Perth and West Perthshire, 46% of West Perthshire and Kinross, 3% of Angus South

Stirling – 34% of Stirling, Falkirk and Grangemouth, 33% of Stirlingshire West, 21% of West Perthshire and Kinross
Clackmannan – 60% of Stirlingshire East and Clackmannan, 2% of West Perthshire and Kinross
Falkirk West - 33% of Stirling, Falkirk and Grangemouth, 30% of  Stirlingshire West, 13% of Stirlingshire East and Clackmannan
Falkirk East - 33% of Stirling, Falkirk and Grangemouth, 27% of Stirlingshire East and Clackmannan, 8% West Lothian

When did Maxwelltown et al get added to the Dumfries constituency [qm]. IIRC it was added to the burgh in the '30's.

Being on the other side of the river, it was in Kircudbright. So from 1918 onwards to 1950 it would have been part of Galloway. Even though it was abolished and shifted to Dumfries Burgh and Dumfriesshire in 1928 I don't think there was any change to the boundaries between Dumfries CC and Galloway CC

So..I think

1918-1950 Galloway
1950-1983 Dumfries
1983-1997 Galloway and Upper Nithsdale
1997-2011 Dumfries
2011-         West Dumfriesshire and Galloway

Might have been West. IIRC it had very odd boundaries.

Amusing that a Labour constituency was ever named after a place like Bothwell.

Fixed smart arse Smiley

Bothwell is a 15-20 minute walk across the river for me.

It's a commuter suburb, with it's own castle and golf course and home for current and ex Old Firm footballers. It's quite nice actually though a bit high brow.

Votes Tory.

In principle it is.

But in this case I just didn't know that it was a typo. Anybody capable of naming a seat Inverness, Inverness East, random village near Inverness and Inverness Rural is capable of naming a ward Hamilton W & E too. Especially if (hey, it would have been conceivable) this was sort of an accurate description.

I suppose. Perhaps I was a bit quick off the mark.

They are still doing it . West Dumfriesshire and East Dumfriesshire and Galloway being a case in point. The West seat is the old Dumfriesshire County. The East seat doesn't have anything that could be remotely considered Dumfriesshire in it.

Assuming that's all the seats now suitably posted. I'll do 1979 (as a test to see if they tally) and then October 1974 afterwards.

I'll be posting those soon. There may be some guesswork there as the source material for some of the seats is a bit off.
