I doubt McCain gets anything from Maine, though I do vaguely recall something about Obama being somewhat competitive in the Omaha-area CD. What do you think?

There's some, but the days of NE-2 being a longshot tipping point possibility are way over.

ME-2 is not a tipping-point concern, but is probably a more likely proposition than NE-2.

I guess, but only if McCain and Palin pounce in the debates, and if Obama or Biden makes a gaffe that has traction in the media.

A very slight one in ME, but very slight.

NE-2 could go to Obama and ME-2 to McCain, but only if we end up not having a close election.  Unless one or the other ends up getting more than 300 EV's, there won't be a split this year.  Only reason Obama should spend any money in Omaha is to help with Western Iowa.

Obama will have a comfortable win in Maine, taking all the electoral votes.

McCain will have a solid win in Nebraska, taking all the electoral votes.

If Obama wins by enough, NE-2 might flip. But in a 50-50 race, probably not.

Obama is advertising and organizing in NE-2, so I assume that if he wins by enough of a margin it's possible.  At least he's TRYING, haha.  If North Dakota flips I guess NE-2 is in the danger zone.

McCain less so for ME because the effort isn't there.  Maybe if McCain started to dominate he'd try and help Snowe?  Doubtful that Snowe would be in danger if McCain was winning so he'd be doing stuff elsewhere like Oregon, Minnesota, and Louisiana.

I'd be really surprised if Nebraska splits.  Be surprised if Maine splits, for that matter, but really surprised if Nebraska splits.  When was the last time they did that, anyway?  I'm thinking that neither one ever has.  I started looking at previous election results on Dave Leip's Forum and got back to 1884 before the metacarpals in my right arm just got too tired of scrolling and clicking.  I prefer ignorance to carpal tunnel syndrome, to be honest.  But I'd be willing to guess that neither ever has.

Maine started dividing its electoral votes by CDs in 1972 and Nebraska in 1992. Before that they were winner-take-all like all the other states. And they have yet to actually split their electoral votes.

Much obliged.  We probably went over this in eighth-grade History.  Then again in twelfth-grade civics.  Then again in some Freshman-level liberal arts core courses in college, but I was stoned most of that period, and consequently only physics, chemistry, and mathematics made sense at the time.  Of course, Nebraska hadn't yet been admitted to the union as a state when I was in school, but at least we'd have learned about Maine, I imagine.

I'll try to pay attention in class more often.  Smiley

If Obama wins a landslide he'll win NE-02.

If McCain wins a landslide he'll win ME-02.

In other words, no chance at all.

The only reason those two states use that system is because all their CDs are so similar that it was virtually impossible for a split to occur.

It's also why party leaders of the big states block these proposals.
