GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Barack Obama holds a one-point lead over John McCain in the latest EPIC-MRA poll released Friday.
The poll, done for WOOD TV8 and our broadcast partners, shows 43% support Obama while 42% back McCain. Libertarian candidate Bob Barr has 2% with independent candidate Ralph Nader garnering 1% support.
Of those supporting McCain, 21% generally agree with his positions, and 18% because he's conservative. They don't support Obama because, 28% say, he lacks experience.
The Obama supporters see things a bit differently. Obama represents change, say 41% of those responding, and don't support McCain because, 42% say, he'd follow the current Bush policy.
Obama holds a six-point lead, 48-42, among voters who answered who they'd be comfortable with as president.
Each candidate has a high favorable rating - Obama 54% and McCain 51% - and the vice presidential candidates are viewed favorably as well. Gov. Sarah Palin's favorable rating is 48% and Sen. Joe Biden's is 47%. However, the McCain-Palin ticket has a higher unfavorable rating (42% and 35% respectively) than the Obama-Biden ticket (36% and 30% respectively.)
By contrast, President George W. Bush is viewed favorably by 25% of respondents, but unfavorably by 62%.
By a more than 3-1 margin, the top concern among voters is the economy and jobs (43%) followed by protecting America from terrorism (13%)
The US Senate race between incumbent Carl Levin and GOP challenger Jack Hoogendyk is not close. Levin leads 56-28, with only 16% undecided.
The poll was conducted between September 14-17 with 602 respondents. It has a margin of error of +4%.
