If Obama wins the election, name some cabinet members he could appoint and to which office he would appoint them.

I wonder where he'd put John Kerry, who is probably eager for a prestige appointment.

It's obvious that Hagel is going to be in the cabinet.  I don't think Hillary wants a position.

I was actually going to post a similar list to Vander Blubb with Wright and Sharpton and whatnot, alas

He's already going to be McCain's SoS, according to DWTL!

Pretty much guessing like everyone else...

Secretary of State:   Richard Lugar

Attorney General:   Artur Davis, John Kerry or what about Hillary?

Secretary of Labor:   Richard Gephardt

Health and Human Services:  Howard Dean  (why not?)

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development:   Shirley Franklin

Secretary of Defense:  Wes Clark  (would Powell be considered?)

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs:  Tony Zinni or Claudia Kennedy

National Security Advisor:  Tony Lake or Richard Danzig

Veterans Affairs:   Chuck Hagel or Max Cleland

Homeland Security:  Napolitano is supposed to be seeking the job, purportedly because of her experience with the immigration issue.  Bloomberg has been mentioned. I might look at Tim Roemer, of the 9-11 commission.

Education:  I would have said Roy Romer, but I didn't realize how old he was. I would look at Kathleen Sebelius. Ruth Simmons of Brown University could also be a contender.

Agriculture:  If she loses her race, Jill Long-Thompson would be a smart pick for Obama.  Otherwise, Dan Glickman could be tapped again. Tom Vilsack is a possibility, too.

Treasury:  He make keep Paulson on for a year or two for stability.  Bob Reich would be great at Treasury or Commerce. Larry Summers is said to really want his old job back.

EPA:  Though I would love to see Gore there, Rep. Ed Markey would also be a top choice.

Energy:  Another good place for Gore but what a step down.  Can't think of anyone else at present.

Interior:   Janet Napolitano.  Failing that, maybe Governor Freudenthal.  Obama definitely wants a westerner.  Schweitzer would be great, but he has other plans I believe.

Transportation:  Bring back Federico Pena or perhaps look to someone really committed to high speed rail and  reimanging transportation in the 21st century.

Here are some thoughts:

Sec. of State:Bill Richardson
Attorney General: Rep. Artur Davis
Sec. of the Interior: Janet Napolitano
Sec. of Agriculture: Kathleen Sebellius
Sec. of Housing and Urban Development: Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.

Also I think putting Al Gore in charge of the EPA might not be as far fetched as one might initially think.  It might be something Gore would actually want to do as it would give him enormous influence in shaping our country's policy on the environment.

You know, for having such an aristocratic upbringing, you really aren't that smart.  Yes, crazy or just plain stupid - those are the only two possible explanations.

Perhaps.  Another possibility is that a President Obama might consider global warming to be a enough of a national priority that he would revamp the federal bureaucracy, re-arranging various agencies within a larger, new federal department (think of an environmental version of the Department of Homeland Security) that could more effectively meet the challenges posed by global warming, with a Sec. Al Gore at the top.

Ugh.  Do I have to pull out my old Wes Clark quotes again?  It would probably take me too long to find them all.  But let's just say that I would hope that Obama would be sensible enough to pick a SecDef who has a slightly less conspiratorial worldview.

Here's something I posted in another thread a while back still:

Here's something I posted in another thread a while back.  To revise, I'd switch Gilchrest and Chafee, and maybe Lugar is too valuable in the Senate.
I kind of lean toward choosing people who aren’t currently in a position where they are working effectively, since most of these are really figurehead positions, anyway, except for State and Defense.

I think something like this would be great come 2009:

President: Barack Obama

Attorney General: John Edwards
Secretary of Agriculture: Phil Batt
Secretary of Commerce: Chuck Hagel
Secretary of Defense: Gen. Henry Sheldon
Secretary of Education: Angus King
Secretary of Energy: Nick Lampson, once he loses his seat
Secretary of Health and Human Services: John Kitzhaber
Secretary of Homeland Security: Richard Lugar
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Betty Castor
Secretary of the Interior: Wayne Gilchrest
Secretary of Labor: Linda Sanchez
Secretary of State: Sam Nunn
Secretary of Transportation: Shirley Franklin
Secretary of the Treasury: David F. Swensen
Secretary of Veterans Affairs: Tammi Duckworth

Vice President: Kathleen Sibelius
Chief of Staff: Tom Daschle
Office of Management and Budget Director: Jim Leach
U.S. Trade Representative: Pete Wilson
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator: Lincoln Chafee
Director of National Drug Control Policy: Ron Paul

Obviously Edwards is out of consideration now.  Lots of these are older, washed-up faces I've admired in the past that probably aren't on anyone's radar anywhere.

Also I don't think its legal.  Don't you have to be out of the military for a minimum of ten years before being SecDef?
