I know it's been like this for a while, but what on Earth is it/is it supposed to mean?

It's in Japanese, and if you don't have a language/character pack that has the characters it appears as that completely meaningless gibberish.

I get:  circle, dot, triangle, blotch, Yen, t, hebrew letter Chet, bracket, patriarchal cross, A, V, latin cross, c, V, ê, and superscript-L.

I always wondered what that means as well.

Actually a tiny smiley face, I think.

I actually prefer the gibberish to japanese characters. Looks more distinctive to me.

You knew the Hebrew letter?

Oh, and blotch is a black smiley face.

I have the Japanese language pack on my computer, but it's still just gibberish.

Little bitty Al Jolson on its side, you think?  Hard to tell without the bow tie and white lipstick.

The Hebrew letter could be Chet or He.  They look alike in this font.  It's definitely not Tav.

See, this is why I prefer to watch debates solo.  No side distractions.  None of the "OMG they're both wearing the same tie!" or "Do you think Barack's ears look too big?"  or "Why is the old man's jaw so asymmetric?"  or "I can't believe he now wants to regulate banking after thirty years of mavericking.  What a dishonest, pandering 180-degree turn."
