How would have the 1976 Presidential Election have turned out if Republican Senator Charles Mathias of Maryland and former Democratic Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia were nominated by their respective parties in 1976, and these were the tickets nominated by their respective parties?

Republican
Senator Charles Mathias of Maryland
Governor Robert Ray of Iowa

Democratic
Former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia
Senator Walter Mondale of Minnesota

How would have this 1976 Presidential Election have turned out? Discuss with maps.

I hate to say it, Conor, but Mathias as the Republican nominee is pretty much implausible. Think Lowell Weiker or Lincoln Chafee. I know Mac Mathias ran briefly in 1976 but it would be like a Jerry Brown, Alan Keyes, or Al Shaprton running - pretty much a joke. It's amazing enough how long he kept his Senate seat.

I know Mike. Believe me I know. I just wanted to see how much Mathias would have been crushed by Carter and how many voters would have turned out in a 1976 match up between Senator Mathias and former Governor Carter. But I do believe that had Senator Mathias been nominated in 1976 that he would have been crushed.
