Nay (D)

ALL corporate welfare should be banned under all circumstances.

This is not corporate welfare!

Good grief.

Do you realize how serious this crisis is?

Go educate yourself on this matter. If this bill is not passed, you have the very real possibility of losing your job.

This is serious stuff.

I would have voted against it, but I would have also submitted a smaller bill for $200B directed solely at restructuring the "toxic" mortgages.  Target the actual problem, and the markets will respond accordingly.

I'd have voted against it and voted for your alternative!

I'm now at risk of losing my job which is so understaffed I'll be working overtime later today and is currently offering virtually unlimited overtime to anyone who wants it?

Well I fail to see how the failure of this is going to cause everyone who owns an iPhone become an expert at using and never needing tech support but whatever...

If I was enough of a moral criminal to get elected to Congress, then I suspect that I'd cravenly vote in the general direction that the loudest of my constitutions indicated that they support. Unless I have a very, very safe seat. In which case, I'd play the greasy-pole game and try to earn brownie points from my party leadership.

But I'm not. And as it happens, I don't know whether I support it or not; I'm honest enough to admit that I don't know enough about banking and so on to know what (if anything) is necessary to stave off disaster. And, well, most of the arguments for and against seem to be dominated by scare-mongering and bandwaggoning of one form or another.

No credit = no customers buying Iphones.

No credit = your employer cannot set up a payroll account to pay you.

I actually have to agree with Chris for once in my life. If nothing happens, we are in serious sh**t. The markets are down 700 right now and tomorrow will be even worse. If this fails totally, the credit market dries up. More banks will go under. More people will lose their job.

For God's sake, Apple is down $25 today. If you don't think it will effect you, think again. Apple will be hurting during this period. This is a serious crisis and just sitting idly by and letting it sort itself out isn't an option. The whole world was waiting on this and it failed. Tomorrow will be even worse than today.

Really? I thought you said you reluctantly supported it. Unless you meant you support some sort of bailout but disagree with the terms of the current one.

This, basically. Although in very vague, uninformed, general terms, I'm for FAR more oversight and against throwing money at the scoundrels.

The latter.  But not really a "bailout".  There must be private responsibility down the line.  And no pork.
