November is coming, someone will be elected President and Congress will have elections. No matter who is elected there will be no wanton bombing of Iran nor will Lenin be found on Pennsylvania Ave. Someone will set out an agenda and no soup lines will form. Extremists will always be loud and danger will always be present, but the good ones, the 97% or so of us who like to check our email and have a drink now and then like good Americans (and you foreigners too) will go on living in a capacity that is nearly identical to the one we have this moment.

The end is not 'nigh, the center can hold, there are no huns at the gate.

I agree with all but the "no soup lines will form."

5% of it. The remainder will have acclamations. In Arkansas, not even that.

I dunno - maybe John McCain wins, then dies before the electors convene, and Rep electors choose Robert Stark or John Ashcroft.

Someone might smuggle his corpse there. I've seen Lenin's corpse, btw.

Extremely unlikely. If it's set out, it's probably not their real agenda.

Soup lines already exist. You mean that no one of the people you called the 97% has to cue there. Different thing.

Dangerous extremists rarely are loud. Loud extremists are rarely dangerous. Excemptions to prove the rule may of course be cited.

Ah, finally a statement I can agree with!

I agree.

Except, I said the same thing in 2000 when my candidate lost.  And then we were attacked.  I'm not saying it was Bush's fault -- not at all!   Just that things happen to alter our way of life.  I sure hope you're right.

And if your larger point is that neither McCain nor Obama is a monster, I couldn't agree more.  I think they are both very good, capable and decent men.

I don't trust McCain given his record and statements.

nor will Lenin be found on Pennsylvania Ave. Someone will set out an agenda and no soup lines will form.
I'm already starting to see those around here. As usual I don't have much confidence in the government.

This thread reminds of one time when I watched the Ellen show and she called up some old lady in Texas who had that raspy smoker voice with a southern drawl.. you know what I'm talking about...

and she's telling a story to Ellen, and she starts it with

"Listen... I love Jesus, but I drink a little bit."

And I realized that at the end of the day, that explains most of us... it's what makes us American.  We started an experiment 230 years ago and we have stumbled and fumbled and tripped our way along for most of it... and the day we hold ourselves in such high regard that we can't accept that, we've failed that experiment.

Elections are rarely fought over anything substantive. The last time we had such an election was arguably 1916.

And he'd be right. We aren't going to see war with Iran.

1940?  Hell, 1968?  (When the social issues are deadly, the social issues count as substantive)

Until Humphrey made an about-face (with Johnson's permission), 1968 was fought on an issue.
