Ever since Rasmussen showed Martin looking surprisingly strong after the primary, this has looked like a potential sleeper race. There might be some anti-Republican backlash in Georgia over the gas prices there, too; Perdue has gotten himself into a lot of trouble by vacationing while parts of the state are enduring chronic gasoline shortages, and that might hurt Chambliss by association.

Its the economy that is doing this.  If Democrats win this seat, they will pick up 12 Senate seats.

Ok, the same poll has women going McCain 55-42 and men going McCain 50-46.  Likewise men go for Martin while women for Shameless?  I doubt this very much.

I don't trust SUSA, but this is the only piece of good news Martin has had since the primary.

Keep in mind that in Georgia (or suburban Atlanta, at least; I dunno about the rest of the state) there's still plenty of gas stations completely lacking in fuel. Gas that is available is going for $4+, at the most expensive rates in the nation.

Take a look at this map: http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx

I'm not saying Martin will win, but this is the sort of economic climate that would make Georgia elect a Democrat to the Senate.

Oh, wow. I'd love to knock off Chambliss. That might possibly be better than destroying Santorum last year. Possibly.

Also, increased black turnout from Obama (and his voter registration in the state before he pulled out) can't hurt.

This is too good to be true.  I think Obama-Martin get about 43% to McCain-Chambliss' 54%-55%.

White guy who beat Vernon Jones in the runoff. Lost Lt. Governor election in '06. Prior to that, was (IIRC) a chairman of something in the GA House.

Doubt it, but if even Saxby Chambliss is in trouble, the Republicans who are still left in Congress might as well not bother showing up next Congress because the Democrats will have a vast, undefeatable majority in both houses.

Yeah, might as well give up all together. That's what the Dems did after 2004. And they never saw the majority again...

Could be right.  Of course, one poll is, alas one poll.  Let's see.

Roll Eyes  Hear me out, Phil:

Democrats were only down a few seats in 2004 not damn near 20.  If guys like Saxby Chambliss are falling in states like Georgia, the Republicans would probably only have 38-39 seats in the Senate, less than 200 in the House, and a Democratic presidency.  The only consistent voice they'd have is if they challenged every legislation out of Congress in the Supreme Court.

Granted, I think this poll is complete BS and my point will be moot.
