How would the 1984 Presidential Election if these were the tickets, nominated by their respective parties?

Republican
President Ronald Reagan of California
Vice President George H.W. Bush of Texas

Democratic
Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York
Senator Gary Hart of Colorado

How would this 1984 Reagan/Moynihan match up turn out? Discuss with maps.

Here's my best guess:

Unfortunately I don't think it mattered much who the Democrats ran in 1984, Reagan was going to win.  But I do think Monihan may have taken his home state and a couple of other New England states.

Popular Vote
Reagan     56 %
Monihan    43 %

Electoral College
Reagan   482
Monihan   56

Ronald W. Reagan/George H.W. Bush (R): 427 EV, 55% of the PV
Daniel Patrick Moynihan/Gary W. Hart (D): 127 EV, 45% of the PV

Although I believe for the most part that Senator Moynihan would have been a stronger candidate than Walter Mondale in 1984, I believe that he still would have lost to President Reagan by a comfortable margin. For the most part, you can see that my 1984 Electoral College map is remarkably similar to Ben's posted earlier, however I have given Senator Moynihan the benefit of the doubt by winning Pennsylvania.

I'm curious as to why you believe Moynihan would win MN. It was Mondale's home state and he still won it by less than a percentage.

Did Moynihan consider running in '84?

An easy landslide for Reagan, although slightly more interesting.
