Ok, let's say Sarah Palin utterly tanks Thursday night's debate with Joe Biden. I'm not saying she will, let's just say she does. The next Monday, she announces that she's exiting the race to spend more time with her children. The pundits all believe McCain is doomed until Tuesday at noon when McCain rolls out his new running mate, Condoleeza Rice. How does the country react? Where do things go from here?

Even in the unlikely event Palin gets yanked from the ticket, no way would Rice in particular, or any woman in general accept the slot.  No sane woman politician would agree to join a losing cause in a position that make people think she was chosen only for her gender.  (Not that O am saying that the McCain campaign is doomed, but only if it clearly were could I see any chance of Palin being yanked, and even then I doubt it would happen.)

Adding a Bush puppet to a ticket already flanked with Bush comparisons? It would be disastrous for McCain. He may as well pick Rumsfeld.

The conservative base stays home in large numbers on election day.

Independents and Democrats thinking of supporting McCain switch to Obama, angered over McCain's choice of someone so obviously tied to the unpopular President Bush.

Obama wins a landslide victory.

Replacing Palin with *anyone* would be catestrophic for McCain - it would be telling people he got it wrong in the first place and would be seen as an incredible gaffe.

An African-American one perhaps? Just thinking out aloud here folks.

Replacing Palin with *anyone* would be catastrophic for McCain - it would be telling people he got it wrong in the first place and would be seen as an incredible gaffe.

Agreed. If such a dilemmatic was to occur to the McCain campaign it would probably be perceived by the American people more than 1000 times worse than McGovern's 1972 running mate blunder, particularly if McCain replaced Governor Palin with Secretary of State Rice. The shit would really hit the fan then. Thus if McCain replaced Governor Palin with Secretary Rice, the 2008 Election would result in a massive victory for Obama/Biden. However, I do agree with Ernest that if such a scenario was to occur, that McCain wouldn't select a woman to replace Governor Palin with.
