what I suspect it is is that he can't be seen as pulling out of a Bush state. Pulling out of Iowa would have made far more sense than pulling out of Michigan.

Yes but in their conference call explaining the MI pullout they talked about getting to 260 by winning what they call 'the traditional GOP states' of FL, MO, OH, IN, VA and NC and then 'getting the next 10' from NM, NV, NH, WI, MN, or PA. They made no mention of IA and I took from that that they had written it off (which makes sense).

It doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money merely to say they are. To spend more in IA than VA just to save face is not plausible. I bet that this week those numbers are reversed or they are out of IA entirely
