McGovern/Nixon

The split of the Democratic vote would deliver all 50 states to Nixon.

I see Jackson and Nixon splitting the conservative vote, allowing McGovern to win a few states.  Jackson also manages to pull in a few states, but Nixon still wins in a landslide.

George McGovern wouldn't be that idiotic to run a third party campaign, nor if he did embark on such a campaign would he carried any states. If he couldn't carry his own South Dakota in 1972 against President Nixon, I cannot see him carrying it in this 1972 scenario.

However, for the sake of this scenario, I believe that incumbent President Richard Nixon would easily win a second term over Senator Henry 'Scoop' Jackson of Washington and Senator George McGovern of South Dakota. Senator McGovern would of course gain some support but it wouldn't be enough for him to carry some states as some people believe.

In 1972, any Democrat was doomed against Nixon.

Jackson is a much better candidate than McGovern, however, still stands no chance.

McGovern, obviously, comes up empty handed.

Nixon/Agnew                            508
Jackson/Mills                               30
McGovern/Gravel                          0
