I'm assuming most people will say no, but no one thought Ventura would win in 1998, either (in another race that involved Norm Coleman...hmmm). And he actually did hold this Senate seat before, albeit for 2 months and due to appointment only, but it does make him more credible than the average bear (or Independent Senate candidate).

Also, who would he caucus with? IIRC, he didn't caucus with either party in 2002, but then he didn't need to since he knew he'd be out soon anyway.

There's basically no chance, but the only way that I could see him winning is if the Franken/Coleman bloodbath gets even bloodier. But it'd have to get really, really, really bloody.

Well, that's basically what happened in 1998....

But yeah I agree. Almost no chance, but still one to keep an eye on.

No, but I'd love to see it happen.  We need 3 indies in the Senate..

No, though it would be nice to see him win.

If Ventura had run, I think the race would be close to a three-way tie right now. Barkley's probably not strong enough a candidate to make it though. It would be cool though.

Barkley is a stronger candidate than Ventura. He is seen as legitimate, while Ventura is viewed as a total joke now.

Check my Senate prediction.
It's somewhat tongue-in-cheek, mind you.

On a side note, why do most out of staters seem to think Ventura is somewhat popular or respected in Minnesota?

His approval ratings are probably about equal to Bush's.

A lot of people don't realize how much baggage the guy comes with now.

But yes, it would be beautiful just to get another independent in the Senate. He'd probably remain neutral but if he'll caucus with anyone it'd be the Democrats. No benifit in joining the minority side.

Of course he can't... but I'm probably still voting for him Smiley

He does, indeed, have less baggage then Ventura, though polling showed Ventura had a higher percentage before he declared his intentions than Barkley does now... though I believe that percentage would've been pared down to less than what Barkley will get in the long run.

Has Barkley been on any debates? I would like to see him win but it's going to take a bit of luck and strategy in these 28 days to pull ahead for the win.

I haven't seen any, but I believe he would have been; the local media has usually been pretty good in incorporating all the recognized parties in MN, including even the Greens.

EDIT: Yup, looks like he's going to be included, whatever the debates happen to end up being.

Ugh. Barkley is such a joke. I'd vote for Bush for Senate over him. But he may well win.

What's so bad about him? - I ask because I legimately am entirely uninformed on the guy.

There was one on CSPAN on tonight from Oct 5.  he was on there.....i think they are replaying it around midnight.  he took a couple of shots at Franken, but mostly went after Coleman.  It was basically a 2 vs 1

He has no knowledge of anything at all. While he was in the Senate (admittedly not for very long), he barely even showed up. His entire political career is the result of being a buddy of Jesse Ventura, who himself is a pretty big joke.

He worked for Kinky Friedman's campaign in Texas in 2006 (also a horrible person), and has lobbied for tobacco companies and private prison firms since leaving the Senate.

One other thing about Barkley.....if it wasn't for him, it's likely that Ventura never would have been elected.  Barkley managed to cross the 5% threshold in the 1996 Senate race, thus earning the Reform Party public financing from the state for the 1998 gubernatorial race (the race in which Ventura was the Reform Party nominee and won).  If Ventura hadn't had that public financing, he presumably wouldn't have won.
