Maher is worthless. He's an arrogant know it all, even when Steele owned his ass he couldn't admit it.

I hadn't heard of this film until this thread.  Now I'll be sure to see it.

Thanks BushOklahoma for letting me know it exists.  You ought to work for Maher if you're going to help him make money.

What by, out of curiosity?

The people he interviewed, who were clearly not in a position to make the most eloquent explanations of their religious beliefs.

For Christianity he picked people like truckers at a truckstop chapel and the guy who played Jesus at a Christian amusement park.

Also, when he visited one of those ex-gay centers, interspersed with his interview with the leader of the center were gay porn clips.

If you want to see a serious, or even civil, discussion about belief in God, this is not the place to do it.

Considering Maher is a comedian why would you expect a serious discussion?

I just got back from it; kind of funny, but kind of weak, too.  It was worth the price of admission, but just barely.

It's much more fun to parrot the stereotypes and then poke fun at them.  It's no wonder he stayed away from Islam, he'd of had Ali Baba and the Genie from Aladdin on.

He's not quite as spot-on as www.landoverbaptist.org but he's pretty apt in his characterizations.

"Unsaved unwelcome" betrays a complete lack of comprehension of evangelical/fundamentalist Protestantism.

You expect absolute accuracy from a parody?

He said "spot-on."  It's not.

I believe he's saying it's "spot-on" in terms of how ridiculous those people can be, not in terms of how accurate the site is to the genuine article in every little way. Again, the site is an obvious parody, so he obviously wouldn't mean to say that it's a completely accurate representation of every belief the people who are being parodied hold. It wouldn't be a parody if that wasn't the case, now would it?

OK, saw it, very funny, lots of good points, but Maher basically blew it by turning it from what could've simply been an irreverant commentary on religion today to an Einzige-esque hit piece.

The Rotten Tomatoes summary is "Religulous is funny and offensive in equal measure, and aims less to change hearts and minds than to inspire conversation." I can't agree with the second point too much, especially with the last 10 minutes where Maher basically makes his point so bluntly he effectively nullifies the first part, but if it were more accurate of a description, it would've been one hell of a better film.

Still attitudes like the one in the OP just play into Maher's hands.

So you're saying Maher had to resort to sophistry to make his point? Or that the idiots in the audience who "agreed" with Maher couldn't see any of that? Well, knock me over with a feather ...
