This thread is just silly.

But I guess the question depends on whether the "South" is a historical definition or a sociocultural one allowed to change with time.

Isn't Arlington overrun with Asians these days?  Having been there recently, I must say the place was kind of a dump. Old town Alexandria however is charming.

Not really, no.  And you must have been to a different part of Arlington; the area where I live is very nice.  And I agree about Old Town.

Yes he does.

Arlington is in Virginia which is a Southern state. Just because NOVA is now part of the Northeast corridor doesn't change that. The South is defined by states, so either an entire state is in it, or not at all. Wilmington, DE and El Paso, TX are both Southern cities. That may seem illogical to some because of cultural differences, but we need a standard definition for statistics like the Census, which is what I use for my definition.

Correction: The White suburbs. Seeing as PG's nearest equivalent anywhere else in the US is DeKalb GA...

I should've noted I was just talking about the Virginia side exclusively.

Bump due to constine pulling the whole "I'm a real Southern Blue Dog Democrat!" nonsense again and everyone responding "You don't live in the south, give it up!" in return.

Yes he does.

By that logic, New York City is part of Appalachia.

Already covered:

I would actually think Baltimore is if anything *more* southern than DC "culturally".

Without question.

And no, he might have lived in what was The South 150 years ago, but immigration (both foreign and domestic) has transformed the DC suburbs* into something that absolutely cannot be called The South.

*inner suburbs of course

Let's try... He certainly lives within the *historical* cultural borders of the south. I'm not sure you can place the areas within the beltway, or rather those areas within the beltway that don't have a large Black population, as within the *current* cultural borders of the south.

BTW I am quite proud of the fact that I have never been to the "real" South. Indianapolis is probably the most "Southern" city I've ever been to.

Completely false.  Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, Virginia, and North Carolina have parts in the South and parts not in the South.  And 0% of Delaware is in the South.

I don't get how he got that DE was Southern. Slave states at the time of the Civil War is the only possible way to define South to include DE.

That's probably his logic, but blue is where slavery was legal at the time of the Civil War.  Red is where it wasn't.

Perhaps Cubby thinks the entire blue area is "the South"?

To further clarify on what I was saying, this is the map of the Appalachian region:

So if you must consider an entire state to be in one region, then NYC must be Appalachian.

He probably didn't consider that slavery was allowed in the territories. It would be too obvious that it doesn't make sense if he had realized that.

I still find it odd that any of New York State is considered part of Appalachia.

Have you been up there?  It's definitely Appalachia.

Yes I have, and no one there considers it part of Appalachia. It's more hills than mountains. There are some universities. The economy stinks, but that doesn't mean that one is part of Appalachia.

This is obviously no longer true, although I can proudly say I've never been to a Trump county in the south!
