I have been doing alot of research on the U.S. Supreme Court recently. I'm looking for 7-9 people who would be up for this simulation. As I see it, there would be a Chief Justice (selected by the players) and Eight Associate Justices.

What I will be doing is going through Wiki and other sources to find some prominent cases and will post them in a thread. Once that is done, each person will read over the facts of the case, debate within that thread, etc. and finally, cast a private vote. The vote will be PM'd to the Chief Justice. When voting you may write an opinion or silently join the majority or dissent. If no one wishes to author an opinion, the Chief Justice will choose one from the majority and one from the dissent to do so. (That individual may choose someone to co-author, although the co-author must be listed as "joined by") (Opinons don't have to be long and don't have to be anything but one's interpretation).

Then, the results will be posted and made public. There will be so many cases per term and a term will as of now last an indeterminate amount of time. (those with opinions are encouraged to offer them). Once a term is finished, I will be conducting an "ideological chart" so to speak labelling the judicial liberals, conservatives, and moderates.

If anyone has any suggestions or would like to participate please let me know. First come first serve for spots, though if you aren't among the first 9 you will be added to the "court" when someone decides they want to "retire".

Anyway, that's my idea.

L,

You may also wish to have a list of "seniority"...I don't know how you'd determine it, but sometimes the most senior judge on one side of the opinion gets some power to determine who writes the opinion.

Perhaps by the order they signed up?

That's what I was going to do.

So far the current order of seniority is:

Myself
Pit
Bob
Happy
Bull
Xahar
Peter
Bacon

We need one more.

You're right. That's true. Justice Stevens often determines who writes an opinion or dissent. I'm sure we can hammer something like that out.

Hooray!!!!!

We now have our court!

Here they are in order of seniority (once the Chief is selected he will be considered "first among equals" like in the real court. (If anyone else wishes to play, you can reserve your spot for when someone "retires") These names (even if you change your username) should be signed on your opinions, and will not change, so as to make it easy for identification. As I said if it's a joint opinion the lead author will be named and will be "Joined By" the assistant author.

Justice Cynic
Justice Pit
Justice Marley
Justice Happywarrior
Justice Bullmoose
Justice Xahar
Justice Peter
Justice King
Justice Festoon

Now, anyone wanna be Chief Justice?

Well, your place is reserved for whenever we have a "retirement". Perhaps someone can make you their clerk?

Well, it looks like we have two candidates. Justice Bullmoose and Justice Marley. Ok, I'm gonna make it easy... I'll flip a coin. Bull, your call. Heads or tails?

i'm interested to see cynic predict the ideological orientation of the court.

It looks like this court will generally lean left.

one more suggestion...votes PMed to chief...who then assigns the decision/majority opinion, the Chief will inform the justices in dissent who can divy up their stuff accordingly.

Most senior Justice in the minority assigns; like in RL.

I also agree about the losing Chief getting the top Associate position.

Thats not entirely correct.

Those in minority usually just write an opinion, it really isn't assigned, sure there may be an agreement as to who will write it (and who will join etc) perhaps led/spearheaded by most senior, but it isn't nearly as formalized as the majority opinion.

Now of course if the Chief is on the dissent side, the most senior justice in the majority would assign.
