I've always respected Colin Powell and I would likely vote for him, even if he ran as a Republican.

It does come as a bit of a surprise that he actually did endorse Obama.  I figured he would either endorse McCain because of his foreign policy credentials and military service and experience or stay mum.

Instead he endorsed Obama late in the game because he believes Obama will better handle the broken economy and restore our standing in the world.

Of course this won't have a huge impact, but more than a few people that were on the fence for Obama might vote for him now.

My parents are two people (my mom a Democrat, my dad a Republican) who have immense respect for Colin Powell and would think about his endorsement at least a little bit.

Either way, the swing to Obama won't be noticeable by any means because of this, but it will just add to the wave of momentum.

Both Obama and Powell are black, you see.

Horrible attempt at an opeboism there, and horribly untrue as well.

Powell was disappointing, not so much for the McCain campaign but for him as a objective individual.  Man, why did I ever have any respect for this guy?

He threw his own friend under the bus.

You mean he actually put country first (TM)?

That he chose America over personal friendship?

i reckon lord colin put country first when he resigned from the joint chiefs of staff over  gays in the military.  OMG FAGZ IN DA FOX HOLE!!1

or did he put country first when he went up to the un and made the case for war with iraq.  of course now, he blames others for that (a constant in lord colin's career)

the moment obama ever becomes unpopular, lord colin will again put 'country first'

MAmbinder puts this story best:

(1) It deprives McCain of a day to win the news cycle. There are sixteen left.

(2) Powell is a "man who I admire as much as anyone in the world," McCain has said. He was an informal adviser to the campaign early on. And the content of the endorsement acknowledges what McCain's accomplished, studies it, and judges that it is insufficient for the modern world. (Powell is closer to McCain than Obama on Iraq.)  McCain would be a maverick, Powell says, but America needs a transformation figure.

(3) McCain might take this as a personal rejection, and he might wear it on his sleeve.

(4) Powell is a culturally individuated African American hero; to the extent that there remain white voters who have inchoate worries about Obama's race, it helps to have him associated with a man whose race they've already gotten over.  I do think this cohort of people is tiny.

Although I don't care much about this and I don't think it will move many votes, it was disappointing to see what some republicans wrote about this. Powell may be doing this out of self interest but saying he is doing it because they are both black is absolutely insulting. And then you guys wonder why people think the republican party is racist. (I could have quoted any number of other posts in this thread instead)
Uh. The man basically went to the UN, threw his hands up and said "Looka here, we have no evidence whatsoever, but I must stick to my text." I don't think anybody who saw that funny thingy had any doubts about the complete destruction of Iraq's old chemical stockpile left.

Obviously Powell stuck to his post far too long after he saw where this administration was headed, but you can't really claim he helped make the case for the Iraq War.

I've no idea what impact (if any) this will have; but I though it was a very impressive well though out justification.

I am as cynical as the next guy, but Powell discussing this soldier really got to me. Seeing the picture makes it even more poignant.

Obama has criticised the policies Powell stood for. This is obviously nothing to do with policy and everything to do with skin colour. Racisim is racism.

Obama has criticised the policies Powell stood for. This is obviously nothing to do with policy and everything to do with skin colour. Racisim is racism.

1.   a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.   a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine
3.   hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Which of these three did Powell embrace?

Actually, the one black guy that all white people like is Stevie Wonder.

Drat -- he's for Obama, too.
