I just saw this on CNN. They claimed that "election officials" in the state claimed that turnout could get as high as 90% this year.

I chose the sane option (option three).

Ridiculous.  But I have heard that their system of allowing people to vote absentee early and in person is expected to dramatically increase voter participation

However, I would love it if 90% of the population turns out to vote.  After all, it is their responsibility as citizens to do so.

There are probably more ghost registrations in the average election year than 10%, depending on the state and system.

I've seen 90% turnout elections, but in very small areas and rarely, so it's possible.

Hilarious. The only place I have seen turnouts around 90% or higher (sans the Aussie's obligatory voting) is in a well educated and quite rich area in inner Copenhagen so a whole state in the US getting over 90%. That is not going to happen. I will be impressed if it gets over 70%.

I've never understood this sentiment.  If you have a responsibility to vote, isn't the corollary of that a responsibility to be educated about your choices?  Does anyone really see that happening?

People should be actively involved with exploring the details of the candidates.  That is implied with the responsibility aspect of voting; as in, making an informed decision.

If he meant of registered voters than it is possible. VA had 76% turnout of Reg in 2004 so maybe.

if he was talking voting age population, then he is on crack

It's possible that 90% of registered voters could show up to vote, at least in some VA counties.

90%, while unlikely, isn't that ridiculous, if you're talking about registered voters. Obviously we're not going to have 90% of the eligible voting age populace turnout; I doubt that many are even registered.

Remember, in 2004 Colorado was 89%, Oregon was 86%, and Minnesota, Georgia and New Hampshire (three very different states) were at 79%. Virginia was at 76%. So it's certainly not impossible.

My order of preference:

1.  Informed electorate, high turnout
2.  Informed electorate, low turnout
3.  Uninformed electorate, low turnout
4.  Uninformed electorate, high turnout
