No, Vermont has always been such a left state.
This post makes no sense whatsoever. Are you seriously trying to make the claim that McKinley was more "left-wing" than Bryan?

I do think that McKinley's great performance can be attributed to Bryan. His populism was anathema to most of New England (all of that region swung to the GOP in 1896). Most of the Democrats here were probably Cleveland Bourbon Democrats who would have preferred McKinley to Bryan.

He did pretty well, actually; 85% in SC, 67% in AL, and 91% in MS; he only did poorly in GA, where he only hit 57%.

Actually, it tied 1888 with the strongest performance by a Democrat in the state's history; Georgia was where he did fairly poorly.
