Obama: Miami (a la Gore in 2000)
McCain: Somewhere in Western PA
Biden: Scranton, PA
Palin: Somewhere in CO, not sure where

I'd put Palin in Ohio, but otherwise, this is exactly what I was thinking.

Obama - Cincinnati, OH (a bigger turnout here by African-American voters in 2004 or in 2000 would have swing Ohio)
Biden - Tampa, FL (swing the aging transplant Northern population)
McCain - Denver, CO (try to energize Air Force voters in a battleground)
Palin - Indianapolis, IN

Hillary Clinton - Pittsburgh, PA
Bill Clinton - Northern VA
Joe Leiberman - Miami, FL

I've actually been giving this some thought.

But I'm going to extend it to the last 3 days. Only states

Obama:
Sun - PA, MO
Mon - FL, VA
Tues - OH, IN, IL

Biden:
Sun - NC, VA
Mon - CO, NV
Tues - DE, PA, IL

Bill Clinton
Sun - NV, AZ
Mon - OH, PA
Tues - VA, NY

Hillary Clinton
Sun - NV, MO
Mon - OH, PA
Tues - IN, NY
------------------

McCain
Sun - MO, VA
Mon - FL, PA, OH
Tues - CO, NV, AZ

Palin
Sun - NV, CO
Mon - FL, VA, PA
Tues - AK, AZ

Palin is scheduled for IA on Nov 3.

Obama there tomorrow.

What could possibly be going on?

Interesting, but I'll explain it:

Candidate visits have HIGH diminishing returns.  Spending four times as many days in one state does not result in four times the impact.  I wouldn't be surprised if it resulted in only 1.5 times the impact as a single day.  Thus, you basically want to visit every state possible.

McCain is fighting a longshot bid for the presidency right now.  He needs lightning to strike, but if it does, he has to have the bottle out to be able to catch it.  Iowa doesn't have strong early voting, and Palin should play really well in the primary that Huckabee won.  If there's anywhere with the potential for results to defy polling (notably states without strong early voting), you have to energize your base.

It's a smart move on McCain's part, probably.  If the polling is wrong, and McCain hopes it is, his campaign has determined the places where it is most likely to be the most wrong, and put its bets there.  What's wrong with that?

IA has strong legacy R support.  It should, by most accounts, be tossup territory.  I can imagine internal polls showing a closer race, or softer support than Obama.

Plus, it's easier to dominate the news cycle in IA.  PA (Philly) is probably the wrong place to look for attention right now.

My guess is that Obama is going there for symbolism.  Iowa is the state that made it possible for him to become president, I see this as a way to thank them.

I think McCain is probably thinking the state has been neglected by Obama and they may be able to win it with a last minute rally.  There is no way it will work.

I'm still guessing Scranton for Biden.

I almost got Palin right (she's going to Reno, then Elko - if it had been reversed, I'd have been right).  And given the time of McCain's last Nevada appearance, I expect him to hold a real rally in Prescott.  By the time Palin gets up to Alaska, it will be election day, so Anchorage doesn't count.  I was off on Obama - I expected Indiana, not Virginia.

I messed up on Palin mostly because Florida is so far from Alaska, her final stop.

Hum.

I don't think these campaign stops mean much at this point except to maybe energy the base to work the streets a bit more. Ya, I know, you get some local media coverage, but showing a campaign event when the candidate repeating the same old lines, is boring. At this point, it's the ad wars and the ground game.

I would've suggested:

McCain: Cleveland
Palin: Colorado Springs

Obama: Indianapolis
Biden: NOVA

I have wanted/thought it would be wise for McCain's final rally to be in central Bucks county. I have pictured what the rally would look like, too. I guess a rally in lower Bucks would make even more sense if he's targetting the blue collar types that went strongly for Hillary in that area. Plus, it's closer to NE Philly. I doubt that this would make much sense though after his recent rally in the area so I'd stick with an event around Yardley or Doylestown.

McCain will be in Perkasie tomorrow.  He goes to Wallingford and Scranton on Sunday.

Realistically, McCain needs to get to Arizona to vote and watch the returns.  So a western swing makes sense.

Perkasie?  Is that an actual town? It sounds like the name of a whorehouse. Where is it?

Yes, it is an actual town. It never reminded me of a name of a whorehouse. Instead, I've always thought of the drug that sounds a lot like that name.

Anyway, again, it's in Bucks county.
