What would happen if the actual votes resulted in a tie?

Like 1 million and 1 Obama vs. 1 million and 1 McCain?

Gotta love Missouri, right.

Seriously though, Missouri is almost always like this...basically a turnout game between St. Louis/Kansas City and the rest.

I think St. Louis will win this year...Smiley

I guess there must be a provision in each state's constitution for this - perhaps the Governor gets a deciding vote, or the state's legislature, or they split the electors?

In some states, they cast lots.

It usually isn't in the Constitution but in statute.  NV uses draw poker along with other random methods.

It's still my pick for the closest state.

2016 PVI map of the Electoral College, with each state's size proportional to its vote in the EC. Grey states are even (PVI 0 or 1), pale states are lean-likely (PVI 2 through 5), dark states are solid (PVI 6 or more).

I know for downballot offices, some states have methods as rudimentary as drawing lots, as JJ alluded to.  if this happened on a presidential level, who knows.

...or they could have a duel.

Effective policing requires to know when backing down is in the best interest of public safety.  By all accounts, the culture of the Ferguson Police was ignorant of that fact, and instead treated Cartman of South Park as a role model for how to be a police officer.
