How did Richard Nixon do a 49-state against McGovern and get a 20-point lead in the popular vote?

'Acid, amnesty and abortion'. McGovern sacking his VP choice. Unions actively opposing him. Strong economy.

The overall crappiness of the McGovern campaign; Nixon's race baiting in the South, and an overall positive view in the country of Nixon.

Hunter S Thompson wrote a chronicle of the election that clears this up nicely.  Democratic Civil War (tensions boiled over from '68) plus McGovern living out Murphy's Law to the fullest once he secured the nomination.

Because McGovern is way too left wing to have won, especially in 1972. He wasn;t just left, he was way over there.

Why?

I thought it was because McGovern refused to demand the repeal of Taft-Hartley.

I think every Democratic nominee between the time Taft-Hartley passed and the 1990s demanded its repeal except McGovern.

America was not ready for the leftist ideals.

The Thomas Eagleton thing hurt him.

Nixion ran a Obama like campaign.

One side note on the Eagleton thing..

It is said that had that been handled better  McGovern could have won  few more states.

You have to remember the democratic party was still bluedogish at this time.

Watergate sure as heck didn't hurt Nixon's margin any.

Watergate was overkill.

Nym, you've been around here long enough and read enough to know that his landslide was inevitable anyhow. IF Nixon did anything wrong at all it really was meaningless and just "running up the score" so to speak.
