only since Bush I. I don't think it's that so much that being a Vietnam Vet is a kiss of death. Movies and TV have perpetuated the stereotype that Vietnam Vets are permanently traumatized and crazy.

It's not a kiss of death, but it's certainly overrated as a factor that apparently benefits that candidate.  This was the fifth presidential election in a row in which the candidate with more military experience than the other guy lost.

Only the kiss of death when you bring it up as a tool in the campaign.
