I'm pretty sure the answer is no. However, a coworker says yes, citing CQ. ?

Jared Polis is the first openly gay man elected to Congress as such, following in the footsteps of Tammy Baldwin.

The use of the word "secular" as a euphemism for "atheist/agnostic" has always bugged me.

Why? It's also faster to type.

Only one extra Hispanic (Ben Lujan) and no extra Blacks this year, though.

Just out of curiosity, do you know how many blacks there are in congress that don't represent a majority/plurality black seat?

And Pete Stark is an atheist and I believe there are many more congressmen who are not very religious either, and probably agnostic, they just haven't "came out". For that matter I personally don't think John McCain is religious at all.

Because the meanings are different.

Earlier I thought there was a net increase of two women in the House, but I realized I wasn't factoring in open seats retained by their party. Anyone know what that actual number was?

And, as pointed out, there is one additional openly gay person in Congress (Polis) and one new Hispanic (Lujan).

Also discounting seats with narrow white pluralities (not sure quite how many of those there are - three to five or thereabouts) and California seats with Hispanic pluralities - not majorities - and more Blacks than Whites (all three LA Black-held seats are like that), that'd be four: Andre Carson in Indianapolis, Em Cleaver in Kansas City, Gwen Moore in Milwaukee and Keith Ellison in Minneapolis.
A list that, oddly enough, includes both Muslims.

From 2000 to 2004, it was just Julia Carson.

So far as I can tell:

Female gains from males:
AZ-01
FL-24
IL-11
ME-01
NV-03
PA-03

Male gains from females:
NM-01
OH-15 (if Stivers' lead holds)
OR-05
VA-02

So a gain of 2 or 3 female reps.
