I firmly believe that once all of Elvis' original fans die, that so will much of our love affair with him. Johnson's original fans have all been dead for 40 years and his reputation is probably better than it was then.  Elvis did a big thing by bringing black music to white ears and being a little "raunchy" on stage, but he didn't do as much actually to the music.  At least not in the same way Robert Johnson, the Beatles or Michael Jackson did.

Aretha Franklin was the #1 female artist on Rolling Stone's top 100 artists of all time, so she is definitely belongs on a list of top 1000 Americans.

Is that what you got out of that?

It indicates that she is highly regarded as an artist in the music industry. That has to translate at least somewhat to importance in the general public.

Yes for John obviously, but I did not even know who Aretha Franklin or Chuck Berry were until they died, so obviously not for Frnaklin. I barely even know who aretha Franklin even is, so yeah.
Who is Chuck Berry?
