Do your realize that 8 GOP members of the Appropriations Committee won't be back in January.  8 vacancies!  And 4 ranking members (Armed Services, Oversight and Gov. Reform, Small Business, and Ways and Means) will be gone too.

Is that just a huge coincidence that Allard, Sununu, Warner, Domenici, Dole, Smith, Hagel, and Craig were all on the same committee?

There will be considerable turnover on the two most powerful committees in the Senate, Appropriations and Finance, as well.

Appropriations Committee Departures:  Pete Domenici, Larry Craig, Wayne Allard (possibly Ted Stevens)

Finance Committee Departures:  Gordon Smith, John Sununu

No doubt there will be a hard scramble for those slots.  They're plum assignments for any senator.

Is Byrd also resigning from the Appropriations committee, or just from the Chairmanship?

Just from the chairmanship.  Byrd will remain on the committee.

Good.

Does anyone know if Kennedy is giving up his Chairmanship?  I'd guess he would, but is it confirmed?

Smith was ranking member in Aging, Chambliss is the ranking member in Agriculture (but alas will probably still be around), Domenici was the ranking member in Energy.
