Why did Wyoming allow Idaho and Utah to be more friendly to Obama?

I was surprised to see Utah as the 3rd most Republican state, in all honesty.  Wyoming was more Republican than I expected as well.

I believe Wyoming had the lowest swing towards Obama out of all of the Plains/Midwest/Mountain West states. No idea why.

Do you really think Cheney has a negative impact in Wyoming? Not saying that it isn't true, but it would be a bit surprisign to me.

I was quite surprised - it certainly wasn't in line with the polling there.

With Utah, I'd think the mortgage crisis was probably a big factor. It swung Democratic nearly as hard as Nevada did, despite the fact that Obama did basically no campaigning there and hadn't visited the state since the primary.

In both Utah and Idaho, it seems to be that younger LDS tend to be slightly more liberal than their parents, and put off by the growth in power of Evangelicals (who don't like Mormons) in the Republican party.

I have no clue why Wyoming is so much republican than even all of the state around it save Utah. I mean, all of the hicks in this reigion are trying to bring up how Obama makes them miserable even in normal business conversation. Two gas station clerks brought up their hatred of Obama and "people who can't manage their own livies" in less than a week with me when I was just there to buy gas. I am open to any reason why. It could be the Cheney effect (He does treat his supporters very well), but it could be anything else. It could be the influx of oil men who want a government that will optimize their profits by keeping taxes and regulations low and transfer payments and oil prices high. It could be that this state is so rural that guns are really that important and that Obama simply has a bad record on that. Heck, it could also be that Wyoming is such a small population that individuals are strongly influenced by their employers (and they adopt their boss's bottom line as their own because they are afraid that the boss may be priced out by a predatory Washington or, more realistically, that the boss might retaliate by firing them if they found out how they voted) and even more than usual than their parents.

What's strange is that issues such as gays, abortion, stem cells and Harry Potter don't really come up and when they do come up, they are usually dealt with silently with nothing coming of them.

maybe it's the anti-wolf contingent who oppose the restrictions on killing the wolves that have meandered from Yellowstone?  They aren't counteracted as much by some of the more liberal areas that are in Montana, and the few liberals in Jackson are also countered by the rich republicans there as well.

Well, clearly Wyoming's long history of racial tension demonstrates why it was the only state in the entire nation to show a Bradley Effect! Wink

Wyoming was the most Republican state in the nation this time (not the highest McCain numbers, but the largest spread, more than Oklahoma).

I was a bit surprised myself too.

It's the oil industry.  One of the main reasons that Oklahoma went even more Republican this time:

Actually, in some parts of this state, the "n" word still flys.

It probably was the subsidized oil industry and the subsidized cattle industry. They know who will make sure that they get more out of the government than they put in.

Still worth noting every single county in Wyoming swung to Obama.

Although he did under-perform Kerry in Hot Springs County, so obviously he didn't do so hot in parts.

With the exception of Lemhi County, Idaho, and a few in McCain's home state of AZ, every county in every state west of the Texas/North Dakota stack swung to Obama

1.There is a large Mormon population in Wyoming

2.Once McCain started this 'socialist' crap it probably turned the western libertarian vote heavily against him

Not especially large.  Way smaller than Nevada, which is way smaller than Utah.  Its largeness is more of a relative proposition.

It still probably gave him a couple of points. Wyoming also doesn't have a large Hispanic population.

Yea, but Mormon population is pretty steady (they vote early and they vote always) and Obama definitely did better than Kerry among them.

I'm not sure I'd say Wyoming is nearly as libertarian as it's made out to be, especially in those counties that didn't swing much.  It's a state that's wealthier in concept, but really rather working-class.
