A series of improbable events have caused the epic Democratic primary battle to spill into the general election.

It is in early June and Obama has secured enough delegates to vote for the nomination.

Hillary supporters are extremely bitter, and the Obama camp is only taunting and alienating them.

In mid-June, the most surreal day in US politics occurs.

Hillary announces she will run as an independent candidate in the general election. A few hours later, John McCain suffers a stroke and is incapacitated. Until (and even during) the RNC, Republicans are engaged in a vicious attrition war for who carries the nomination forward. Finally, they emerge from the RNC divided, frustrated, disillusioned, and frustrated. They settle on a token candidate who, during the primary season, was considered second-tier. It is the Republican parallel to the 1968 Chicago convention. During September and October, the Republican candidate (who remains nameless) polls in the single digits, with Hillary and Obama ducking it out.

So what happens from here?

I understand the premise, but only the least electable Republican candidate, say Duncan Hunter, would fail to garner double digits. For example, Tommy Thompson would probably poll in the 30's.

Anyway, accepting your scenario: I would vote for Hillary, and Hillary would win.

I'd rather Hillary than Obama.
