For being honorable/principled most likely.

Technically Russ Feingold is very principled too, however (criticizing Obama for his abandonment of public financing)

He stands up for what he believes in even when it conflicts with the party line. I find his determination to fight for what he thinks is right, even when politically inexpedient, admirable. There certainly are a couple of other very principled senators, like Feingold whom Lunar mentions, but none of them have had to withstand the wrath of their party's establishment like Lieberman has.

He's basically told the party, "fuck you" over one issue, on which he doesn't even represent his constituents' wishes.

Uh, the people of Connecticut decided Lieberman represented their wishes well enough when they reelected him 2006, knowing full well his opposition to his party's stance on Iraq.

1.  Paul Wellstone (his work is not finished)
2.  Amy Klobuchar
3.  Russ Feingold
4.  Bernie Sanders
5.  Barack Obama

Yeah... pretty Minnesota-centric... but I'm not well versed in other states' politics.

If we're doing Senators from any time, please note my obvious revision for my number one spot.

Connecticut reelected Lieberman in spite of his opposition to the war, not because of it. Lamont made the mistake of running basically a single-issue campaign.
