I thought they had changed the rules such that eleventh-hour retirements and appointments don't affect seniority?

(Or is that not applicable in this case because Obama wasn't re-elected to the Senate this year?)

Also, Obama may wish to avoid the Lieberman vote.

We should know very soon who Blagojevich will appoint.

Probably not until late December.

Unless the Democrats need an extra vote for the auto bailout.

That only applies when it's involving office space; Obama's replacement will be ahead of the other Democratic incoming Senators in terms of seniority.
