Remind me again, who here ever really defended Chavez? Other than BRTD until he recognized his typical "moralism" the targets of these threads tend mostly to exist outside this website and in the imagination of right wingers.

This ain't surprising or anything.

my 'defense' of him always has been (and remains) that he is preferable to the alternative.

Come on, even a lot of the Venezuelan people have got to be wondering by now if Chavez is "all there."

not sure why you take all of your hate out on these three (two are democratically elected, one is old and sick and/or dead).  why not Karimov, Putin, Jintao, etc?  they are all so much worse on so many levels...

EDIT: I doubt you know who Karimov is, come to think of it
EDIT II: or Morales, either

Who would have thought that Hugo might pull a stunt of this calibre? I know I certainly didn't.

hopefully you're speaking in clauses, because I don't think any human being "deserves Gitmo."

and it should be pointed out that Chavez and Morales have never killed anyone; in fact, I am 100% sure not even one person has been *executed* in Venezuela under Chavez (and since the 1850s, IIRC.  Catholic thing) so every US president and every state governor that has allowed executions to cross his/her desk uninhibited has more blood on his/her hands than does Hugo Chavez, who is nothing but a silly media whore who needs high oil prices to stay popular.

Do you think this poll would turn out differently today or the same?

how do those results contradict what Gully said?  there aren't many glowing reviews of Chavez in that thread.  Bush is quite unpopular here, if you have not noticed...

But worse than Chavez?  I don't recall Bush threatening to bring in tanks if Liz Dole lost her Senate seat.

longer-standing democratic tradition here in the USA.  and it isn't fair to ask people to properly forecast the tanks comment from a year ago.
